Work sandals for summer: working safely in warm temperatures
When it gets warm in the warehouse, workshop or production area, closed safety shoes can quickly feel heavy and uncomfortable. Work sandals and safety clogs combine better ventilation with important protective features such as toe protection, slip-resistant soles, anti-static properties or ESD protection.
Work sandals are not suitable for every situation: safety sandals are mainly designed for dry, clean and well-ventilated working environments. For wet outdoor areas, heavy dirt, construction sites with nails or work with a high penetration risk, closed safety shoes or higher protection classes are often the better choice. For all other applications, safety sandals offer clear advantages:
Perforations, open side areas or clog constructions improve air circulation.
Our models are equipped with 200-joule protective toecaps.
Reliable protection despite a lightweight, airy design. The protection class depends on the workplace and the risk assessment.
In warehouses, industry, workshops, medical environments and food areas, sandals can be worn all year round.
SB and S1: what do the safety classes mean?
EN ISO 20345 is the international standard for safety footwear. It defines the minimum requirements a shoe must meet to be certified as safety footwear, especially for protection against injuries caused by impact and compression, and divides footwear into different protection classes. For work sandals and safety clogs, the SB and S1 classes are particularly relevant.
| Protection class | Meaning | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| SB | Basic protection according to EN ISO 20345. The central feature is the protective toecap against impact and compression. Depending on the model, additional properties such as slip-resistant soles, anti-static properties, ESD or an energy-absorbing heel area may also be included. | Dry indoor areas, medical environments, food industry, cleanrooms, service, light industry and activities requiring toe protection. |
| S1 | Protection class for dry working environments. S1 safety shoes offer toe protection and are suitable for work where protection against impacts and falling objects is required, without moisture or mud being a central factor. | Warehouse, logistics, assembly, workshop, production, laboratory, technical workplaces and dry indoor areas with long periods of standing or walking. |

Which work areas are work sandals suitable for?
Safety sandals and safety clogs are especially useful in places where employees stand for long periods, walk a lot and benefit from better ventilation at the same time. Typical applications include dry indoor spaces, well-organised production areas and workplaces with a low risk of dirt and moisture.
- Warehouse and logistics: comfortable for long walking distances, order picking and warm halls.
- Assembly and workshop: useful on dry floors when toe protection and stable footing are required.
- Industry and production: suitable for dry work areas with regular standing and walking.
- Medical, care and food areas: especially clogs such as FW82 can be relevant for these sectors thanks to microfibre, fold-away strap and self-cleaning outsole.
- ESD areas: models such as FC03 and FW48 are suitable for electrostatically sensitive working environments.
What should you look for when buying?
| Criterion | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Protection class | SB is sufficient for basic protection with toe protection. S1 is useful for dry working environments with additional requirements. The protection class must match the risk assessment. |
| Protective toecap | Steel toecaps are robust, while composite toecaps are metal-free and often lighter. This can be decisive for ESD or metal-free areas. |
| Ventilation | Perforation, open side areas and breathable material improve comfort in warm temperatures. |
| Outsole | Slip resistance, oil resistance and heel energy absorption are important for secure footing on smooth hall, ceramic or steel floors. |
| ESD | For electronics, laboratories, cleanrooms and electrostatically sensitive workplaces, ESD marking should be checked specifically. |
| Fit and closure | Hook and loop closure, heel strap or clog shape affect support, comfort and quick putting on and taking off. |
| Working environment | Work sandals suit dry, clean areas. In wet conditions, heavy dirt or penetration risk, closed models are usually more suitable. |
Conclusion: work sandals make sense when the working environment allows them
Work sandals and safety clogs are not a universal solution, but for many warm indoor spaces they are a very practical alternative to closed safety shoes. They offer more air circulation and, depending on the model, still provide toe protection, slip-resistant soles, anti-static properties or ESD protection.
FC03 is especially interesting when ESD, metal-free construction and breathability are important. FW82 is well suited to medical, cleanroom and food industry areas. FW48 combines S1 protection, ESD and hook and loop closure in a lightweight microfibre sandal. FW42 is a robust S1 sandal made from cow suede leather for dry, warm working environments.
