How do you choose the right thickness?
Fleece is measured in grams per square metre. Around 200 grams is a light fleece for the in-between seasons or as a layer under a jacket; 280 to 330 grams is sturdy winter fleece that you can also wear on its own. A 150-gram microfleece is mainly intended as a thin insulating layer and takes up little space.
Also consider the finish: a high collar keeps drafts off your neck, elastic cuffs stop cold air getting in through the sleeves, and zippered pockets make sure nothing falls out when you bend down.
Fleece and wind
Standard fleece is not windproof. In strong wind that makes a big difference to how cold it feels, so wear a windproof jacket or bodywarmer over it, or choose a version with a membrane. If you work in freezing conditions, check out thermal clothing; alongside roads, high-visibility fleece.
