Choose by season and working conditions
A softshell is light, windproof and stretchy and works well in spring and autumn. A lined winter jacket insulates and is usually also water-repellent. A 3-in-1 jacket combines both: wear the outer jacket in summer, the inner lining as a separate bodywarmer or fleece, and both together in winter. If you work outdoors in the rain all day, look at rain jackets to EN 343.
What else to look out for
An adjustable hood and cuffs keep out draughts. A two-way zip makes bending easier. If you wear the jacket over tool belts, choose a slightly longer model. And check the pockets: a zippered inner pocket is where your phone stays dry.
If you work in an environment with a specific risk, there are certified versions: high-visibility jackets, flame-retardant jackets and cold-resistant jackets for freezer facilities.
