Everything you need to know about PPE
PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment: equipment that protects employees against risks to their safety and health at work. In the EU, PPE is covered by the PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
Three risk categories
- Category I – protection against minimal risks (e.g. light rain, superficial contact)
- Category II – protection against medium risks, not fatal or irreversible (e.g. basic safety footwear, work gloves such as the Griphandschoen Latex Portwest A100)
- Category III – protection against serious or fatal risks, where the user cannot immediately estimate the danger (e.g. fall protection harnesses, respiratory protection, hearing protection)
Important PPE categories
Think of head protection (helmets), eye protection, hearing protection, respiratory protection, hand protection, foot protection, fall protection, and body protection. View our page on protection for an overview by category.
