Insert or standalone knee pads?
An insert slides into the knee pocket of trousers with knee pockets and always stays in place, even if you alternate between standing and kneeling all day. Standalone knee pads with elastic straps can be worn over any trousers and are handy for occasional use, but during long wear they can pinch behind the knee and restrict circulation.
Mind the type and level
EN 14404 distinguishes type 1 (attached separately) and type 2 (insert in the trousers), plus a performance level: level 1 for flat surfaces and level 2 for gravel, stones and uneven floors. With an insert, check that the knee pocket sits at the right height for your leg length; if the protection sits too high or too low, it does nothing.
