Choosing the right level

Cut levels range from A (light) to F (very high) according to the ISO 13997 test. For warehouse and assembly work, B is usually sufficient; for sheet metal, glass and knives, choose C or D; and for metalworking or meat processing, E or F. The highest level isn't automatically the best: the higher it goes, the thicker and stiffer the glove, and a glove that comes off protects nothing.

Cut-resistant isn't stab-resistant

A cut-resistant glove withstands a knife sliding across the material, but doesn't stop a straight stabbing blow; separate chainmail gloves exist for that. When working with heavy material, combine with impact protection, and use a safety knife when unpacking boxes.

Veelgestelde vragen

What cut level do I need?

For warehouse and assembly work, level B is usually enough; for sheet metal, glass and knives, choose C or D; and for heavy cut risk such as metalworking or meat processing, E or F. Don't default to the highest: a thick glove that comes off because it's awkward to work in protects nothing.

Why does an X sometimes appear in the EN 388 code?

An X means that test wasn't performed or doesn't apply. With highly cut-resistant materials, the old coupe test blunts the blade, making the result unreliable; in that case an X is shown and the letter from the ISO 13997 test is the determining value.
